We hold two different types of auction; “live” – held in a saleroom with an auctioneer and a crowd of bidders, and “timed” which take place online over a period of several days.
Catalogues are available, either online or printed (by request), in advance of the auction, with photographs of all lots. There is also a viewing session in advance of each sale where buyers may inspect the items on offer (see sale information for details – online sales may offer online-only viewing, or viewing by advance appointment).
Traditional (Live) Auctions
Bidding in Person We encourage bidders to attend and bid in person wherever possible, both to inspect the lots and to enjoy the saleroom atmosphere on sale day. Bidders should register at the saleroom office for a bidding number (a one-time form to complete, after which we will have your details to-hand on our computer system). A buyers premium is charged at our auctions; details of this will be shown on the catalogue and displayed in the saleroom. All invoices are due on sale day, and may be settled by cash, debit or credit card (there is a small administrative charge for card payments). Purchased lots may be removed as soon as payment has been made.
Absentee/Commission Bids Absentee bids may be executed, but we request that items purchased at our general auctions are collected on the day of the auction wherever possible to avoid additional handling charges.
Online Bidding For selected sales, we offer live online bidding via the-saleroom.com. Bidders may follow the auction online with audio/video coverage, and bid “live” from the comfort of home or office. There is a small additional charge made for this service.
Delivery A competitively-priced local delivery service is available after the auction; quotations are available on request.
Postage For our antiques & collectables auctions we offer a packing and postage service for most smaller lots, this is charged at a packing rate “per parcel” plus postage “at cost” (Please note that postage instructions may only be accepted once purchase invoices have been settled)
Timed Online Auctions
On our online timed auctions, all bidding takes place online. Bidders register to bid, and then submit their bids (“ebay”-style) until the close of the auction. Viewing, Payment and Collection details vary from auction to auction; instructions are given online in the individual auction details. Individual lot closing times are staggered by a few seconds between lots to make it easier to bid, and closing times are automatically extended if a bid is received in the last few seconds of the auction to prevent “sniping”.
